I received the pedal as a prototype and began putting the thing thru the works. When I got into trouble with the cam business, I contacted DW and Bob Gatzen. I had to learn to make extremely fine adjustments...not something I'm accustomed to doing. But it all worked out and I really like the way this pedal handles...on several bass drums with varying hoops (again, a learning experience, but once learned, in the bag!)
By the way, you can really crank the tension (on b.d pedal and hi-hat) for maximum resistance, good news for loud, heel-up players....something I noticed in the thread.
But Peter, I agree with you. At first, I was really thrown by that cam thing hitting the head. But once I got the hang of adjusting the little slider, I found I could get a range of action. Pitty the poor drummer who has to figure this out at the gig, though. The instructions that come with the pedal are less than comprehensive. On the other hand, DW has a good help line.
For me it's been a radical pedal, although maybe it won't rank up there with the invention with steam power in the history books. But it's a solid (or smooth!) alternative to the chain drive/strap drive pedal. If I can hang onto this thing and keep it for gigs, I will gladly do so. Some negotiating ahead.
